Biography of Bishop Joseph L. Shannon, Sr.

Joseph Lee Shannon, Sr. was born in the small town of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. At an early age, he moved to Southampton, New York where he spent most of his life and received his early education. Bishop Shannon graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence with a Bachelor of Science in Education and two minors in Science and Black Studies. He then began a professional football career in the World Football League with the New York Stars. His football career was short-lived because God had another plan for his life. After moving to Omaha, Nebraska he was employed by Johnson & Johnson Company as an Executive Medical and Surgical Representative for over sixteen years.

After serving many years as Jurisdictional Sunday School Superintendent, Bishop Monte J. Bradford appointed Elder Shannon as Pastor to St. Paul Church of God in Christ on August 4, 1985. He came with a vision and a mission. The church experienced tremendous growth, both spiritually and naturally and St. Paul COGIC was later renamed to "Greater St. Paul COGIC." Bishop Shannon is a builder and has lead Greater St. Paul through two major renovations, mortgage burnings and the purchase of a second facility; Greater St. Paul Worship Center, which seats 600. Under his leadership, Greater St. Paul Ministries has become "One Church in Two Locations."

Bishop Shannon is CEO of Bethesda Urban Community Development Corporation, a 501c3 non-profit organization which is involved in developing affordable housing in Omaha. Bishop Shannon is responsible for building fourteen three and four bedroom town houses called Greenview Estates, seven homes called Bethesda Homes and a 28-home affordable Senior citizen complex called Shannon Heights. Bethesda is also a leader in early education with a community learning center and a child development center. Superintendent Joseph L. Shannon, Sr. was consecrated as the Jurisdictional Prelate of the Eastern Nebraska Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Church of God in Christ in November 2012. Bishop Joseph Lee Shannon, Sr is the loving husband to Mrs. Helene A. Shannon for 41 years and is the father of two children, Annette and Joseph, Jr. and he has eight grandchildren.
